Minutes: steering group meeting 10.12.13

Day of Action (Sat 14 December)

  • Still going ahead on Saturday 1130-1430.
  • Part of national PA Day of Action “Can you afford Christmas?”
  • Joe F is organiser.
  • Steering Group members have been encouraging local groups to attend.

National PA meeting in London report back

Matthew R attended the meeting in London on Sat 7th Dec as our representative and gave a report back.

Key points:

  • Plan of action agreed for 2014 which includes a national PA demo against austerity in London on Sat 21 June and a re-call conference on Sat 15 March.
  • We can send 10 delegates to recall conference and are advised to include people from a broad mix of campaigns/organisations.
  • National PA consulting with local groups regarding membership structure which may include individual membership.
  • New national website to be launched in January provided by ‘Nation Builder’ which is a fully resourced activist tool.  We can have a page on the site and can load actions which will be automatically shared.

Structure of SYPA 

  • Agreed to form a working group to prepare a formal constitution and structure of the body which will be reported back to the next Steering Group meeting to be held on Tues 7 Jan.
  • Working group initially to comprise Joe F, Stuart R, Gareth L, Geoff T and Laura P and will meet on Tues 17 Dec at 6pm in the Rutland Arms pub, Brown St, Sheffield.
  • Agreed to hold our first Annual General Meeting on Tues 21 Jan at usual venue (City Campus, Sheffield Hallam University), refreshments to be provided.

Sheffield No Zero Hours Campaign

  • Jack H reported back on this campaign which held an organising meeting on Mon 12 Dec.
  • Meeting was small but action focused.
  • BFAWU (Bakers’ Union) and Unite agreed to work together to support the campaign by sharing resources.
  • A campaign leaflet modelled on the current Unite one to be produced.
  • McDonald’s will be one of the first targets for the campaign.
  • Bigger launch meeting to take place in the new year.

Communications Group Report

  • 24 responses have been received to our meetings survey which although low is still welcomed.
  • Most people prefer every other Tuesday for Steering Group meetings and Saturdays for bigger events.
  • We now have badges available for sale at 50p each.
  • T-shirts to be re-stocked (Dan M).
  • E-newsletter to continue after initial trial on a weekly basis (Matthew R).

Any other business

  • Unite the Resistance ‘Defend our Unions’ Public Forum at the Quaker Meeting House, 6pm Mon 16 Dec.
  • SWP public meeting on Nelson Mandela at Burngreave Library, 7.30pm, Wed 11 Dec.
  • South Yorkshire Migrant and Asylum Action Group Demonstration against the Immigration Bill, Wed meet 12pm outside the new Moor Market, Sheffield.

Next Steering Group meeting will be on Tues 7th Jan, Sheffield Hallam University, at the new time of 6.30pm!
