Universal Credit A Disaster – It’s Official

Universal Credit ‘could cost more than current benefits system’

The National Audit Office says that Universal Credit has “taken too long to roll out” and could cost more than the benefits system is replacing.  It has cost £1.9 billion so far, and is “not delivering value for money”, and continues to cause hardship, with 25% of new claims being paid late in 2017.  Some claimants have been waiting up to 8 months, and are driven to dependence on foodbanks.  We have been saying this all along, but it is good that this national body has documented and publicised the failure.

The Trussell Trust, which runs many foodbanks, and Child Poverty Action have pointed out the hardship it has been causing for a long time.  It is time to scrap this failing system.
